Leeds were never in the game and found themselves behind to a Paddy Ambrose goal after seventeen minutes. On the half-hour mark Jimmy McCann scored with a long range effort and five minutes later Tommy Hamilton put the game beyond their grasp when he made it 3-0 and Leeds never looked like scoring in a lethargic display.

Match Reports: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and Shamrock Rovers team and scorers etc)

Pre-match Report:

"Shamrock Rovers follow their usual end-of-season practice tonight at Dalymount Park where they engage English League Division One side, Leeds United, in an 'exhibition' that is sure to attract a sizable crowd."

"The Milltown side have invariably performed with reasonable success against these visitor teams, and in spite of the absence of 'guest' players, will be expected to hold their own, against what is a first class Leeds United side."

"The fixture holds considerable interest for Shamrock Rovers fans, since it will be their first opportunity to run the rule over old favourite, Noel Peyton, who has been playing with tremendous confidence since being transferred from Milltown."

"Centre-half Charlton is a brother of the Manchester United star, Bobby; and since Raich Carter, the Leeds manager, considers Crowe to be England's future right winger, we should see an exhibition of brilliant football."

Post Match Report:

"Shamrock Rovers deservedly defeated Leeds United, their First Division opponents, 3-0 in a game not lacking in clever football at Dalymount Park last evening."

"Rovers produced their best display of the season. Leeds never threatened to penetrate the defence in which D'Arcy and Keogh were outstanding and failed to cope with the precision passing and accurate finishing of the Rovers' attack. Nolan and Hennessy dominated the midfield exchanges and were the chief contributors ro Rovers' victory."

"Leeds were a disappointing side. Only Centre half Charlton and wingers Crowe and Overfield who had at all times the beating of Burke and Mackey, impressed. Peyton and Cush were seldom seen to advantage."

"Leeds started in lethargic fashion and paid the penalty, whe, after seventeen minutes, Ambrose headed a goal from a cross by Nolan to give Rovers the lead. In the thirtieth minute this lead was increased by McCann with a shot from thirty-yards. Five minutes later Hamilton made the score 3-0"

"Leeds tried hard to save the game, but they could just not beat the Rovers defence."
